Golden groundsel creates a mass of yellow springtime bloom in a wet woodland garden.

Lesser pussytoes is a great groundcover for exceptionally dry locations in both sun and shade, working well in “hell strips” or underneath an eastern red cedar. In the wild, it inhabits challenging, often eroded spots where little else will compete with its small stature: its basal leaves reach just 3 inches tall, with flower spikes growing up to 8 inches tall. The basal leaves are silvery and finely textured, with a single noticeable vein; they contrast nicely with companion plants. The flowers are tight, silky white clusters, like a little toe. Female flowers produce a tuft of awned fruits that look frothy when ripe, whereas the male flowers quickly disintegrate after flowering. Plants spread by rhizomes into a large mass that may be several feet across. Readily propagated by division.
